The comic book hero franchise exploded onto the big screen in the 2000s. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in particular, created a complex, shared world of stories over many films, featuring Iron Man, Captain America, and The Avengers. Many additional film franchises were introduced at this time - Harry Potter (2001-2009), X-men (2000-2020), Lord of the Rings (2001-2003), Shrek (2001-2010), and Pirates of the Caribbean (2003-2017), among others.
By 2010, a new industry business model had emerged. More films were being streamed at home, so Hollywood studios began partnering with streaming companies like Netflix, before launching their own streaming services. Whether in the theater or at home, in the new millennium, the horror film continued to grow in popularity, with films like Jeepers Creepers (2001), The Grudge (2004), and Final Destination (2000).
About the model, The Home Theater

Theaters of the 2000s continued with multiplex-style layouts, but also introduced at-seat, individual tables and food service in some theater brands. With the rise of streaming services, and increasingly affordable home theaters, audiences began to abandon commercial theaters in favor of streaming movies at home. Younger generations have started watching movies on their personal devices, anywhere they happen to be.
As technology evolves, it would seem that the age of the theater is coming to an end.
